A formação musical do Instituto Artístico Carlos Gomes na cena musical nativista de Dom Pedrito/RS

Abstract

This research aims to understand the possible interactions between guitar teaching practices promoted in the Instituto Artístico Carlos Gomes and two folk music festivals in the city of Dom Pedrito (RS): Festival Gaúcho das Escolas Pedritenses and Ponche Verde da Canção Gaúcha. As specific objetives the research sought to: 1) understand institutional support for the participation of guitar students in city festivals; 2) reveal aspects of musical training that can be observed in both spaces; 3) understand how the folk repertoire was inserted in the teaching of guitar. The research has a qualitative approach wich is located in the field of the history of music education within the categorization proposed by Souza (2014) called the history of institutions or also in the axis proposed by the authors Alencar; Monti (2021) of educational institutions. As insvestigation procedures, semi-structured interviews were carried out with teachers, ex-teachers, student and alumni of thw guitar classes offered at the institution, from 1986 to 2021 and a documentary research (materials periocalds, regulations and photographs) about the two festivals as well. The data generated from the interviews resulted in three categories of analysis: 1) The instititute guitar classes; 2) Folk repertoire in the institute and in the classes of guitar; 3) The festivals. The results reveal that in the first decade addressed (1986 to 1996) the guitar teaching at Instituto Artístico Carlos Gomes was not viewed by the institution as a course. The classes taught by the guitar teachers were shaped acccording to musical tastes and the diverse profile of students. The data also show that the folk repertoire wasn’t the only one to be taught neither it was the one for wich every teacher had familiarity but some teachers claim to had to adapt to the repertoire. It was also possible to understand a brief festivals history and how students and teachers participated. It was unanimously found among the interviewes that the institution encouraged the participation of its students in the city’s festivals, taking care with the preparation of students to perform at theses events.
