Levantamento do rebanho ovino na região da campanha - uma análise descritiva

Abstract

Sheep raising was certainly the first animal exploitation made by humankind in the beginning of civilization. This activity is present in almost all states of Brazil ad, in 1990 had an effective herd of 20 million animals. Nowadays this herd counts with approximately 17 million animals. This expressive decrease of the herd, accordingly to farmers and technicians of the sector, is due to the low technical management supervisory basis and the low remuneration received by the farmer, besides the absence of contact among sheep raisers and industry in a single yearly period of slaughtering , feeding management and sanitary insufficiencies. The objective was to characterize the sheep herd evolution in the counties (Campanha Gaúcha Region) up to the year 1991 of 2010 and identify the possible factors that interfered in the sheep herd evolution, with emphasis in the county of Don Pedrito. The county ranks among the 10 greatest sheep raisers of Brazil, according to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). In this study data used were taken from the Record of County Animal Production of 2008 of IBGE and from the State Secretary of Agriculture, Fishery and Animal Production and Agro-business of RS (Rio Grande do Sul State)(SEAPPA) until the year of 2010. Great oscillations were observed, mainly in the last decade, where the herd effectives decreased considerably and it was identified that the records (data) of IBGE and SEAPPA showed significant variation, depending of the collection methodology. It was observed that the data collection which indicates a more realistic situation of sheep herd of the Campanha Region is that originating from SEAPPA, which can subsidize the development of studies that be useful to the sector and farmers, leading to the identification of new options and strategies like a guiding line in the induction of local development, with generation of productivity, qualified personnel and economic income for the region.
