Abstract

The end of the Cold War brought new strategic possibilities to the European continent. Among them, the opportunity for a reformulation of European security. Functionalism and institutionalism are theories that analyze integration processes, such as the one that happened in Europe after the end of the Cold War. Based on this, the problem created was how the neo-functionalist and institutionalist theories analyze the impact of the restoration of the German unity in the process of European security integration. The aim of this paper is to analyze how German reunification influences the process of forming a Common Foreign and Security Policy, taking into account the German reunification process, its historical and geopolitical context, as well as understanding how Germany uses its foreign policy as a tool of power and influence on the European continent. To accomplish this thesis, the research followed an explanatory character, with the Hypothetical-deductive approach method, which is based on bibliographic research. With these tools, it was possible to see that reunified Germany was more willing to give decision-making skills to international associations, directly implicating in the process of forming the common European security agenda.
