No one in aleppo cares about ban ki-moon and his worries: o papel da organização das nações unidas na crise da síria (2011 - 2016)

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the participation of the United Nations in the Syrian crisis in the years of 2011 to 2016 through its actions and peace intermediation. Syria has been dealing with a civil war in its territory since the year 2011, and has its origins in the demonstrations of the Syrian population against its ruler, Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power since 2000 after succeeding his father Hafez Al-Assad , thus giving continuity to the regime of the Assad’s family. With the escalation of the conflict, involving both regional and international actors, and the increase in the number of victims and refugees, the United Nations begins to intervene practically in Syria from 2012. This study establishes a general overview about the origin of the United Nations, its organs and a theoretical debate on international organizations and international relations. Subsequently, the history of the State of Syria is discussed, together with the outbreak of the conflict and the actors involved in it. Finally, it is analyzed the actions and debates applied by the organization in the Syrian crisis, in order to verify its importance in trying to solve the crisis.
